Am Paul hale. I am looking for a gift for a friend who has just started work as a boat builder. Can anyone advise me on the best Chisels to buy as they need to be durable and easy to use in all types of weather.

Not trying to be cute but do you know what kind of boatbuilding? It's somewhat like asking my friend wants to go hunting what kind of gun should I buy him --- deer hunting, bird hunting ,squirrel hunting , groundhog hunting African hunting, etc. would give a vastly different answer

For general purpose use in building small wooden craft, a selection of decent quality woodworking chisels like those sold by Highland hardware are great.

Back in my days of building a mixture of traditional small boats, canoes as well as plywood epoxy small craft, I found 90% of my trimming and fitting were done with a mirror sharp 3/4" basic old chisel and a Lie-Nielsen low angle block plane that always rode in the pocket of my work apron. The style called a bevel edge chisels are good for general use. Hope this helps some and if you know more details, I'm sure there are others that can chime in.
