Lead seems to be going up in price almost daily. If you are like me, (THRIFTY....well, okay, CHEAP!) This eats into your budget like an unemployed relative.
So here's how to save some bucks. If you pick up and save aluminum cans to recycle, swop 'em for soft lead at the Recycling Center. Most places I've dealt with will gladly do this. If scrounging for empty soda and BARLEY POP cans is not your idea of fun, then BUY scrap lead from this same source. Telephone cable sheathing, lead pipe and sheet lead is all pretty soft.
And, if you shoot smoothbores like I do, wheel weights and other harder lead make fine bullets. Most scrap lead is cheap as 15 to 25 cents a pound. Once I paid a whopping 18 cents a pound! The last time I bought some I got 50 pounds for under $7.00!!! Yes, I know it's usually dirty and needs to be remelted, so WHAT? Clean it up and cut it with shears and melt it. Beats paying over a DOLLAR a pound (or more) at ye dealers. To sweeten the deal, why not bring the folks who run the Recycling Center some deer meat or sausage? These good folks have a dirty job and bust their humps to make a living, so share your good fortune.
