|The chill in the early fall air reminds me of a trek I took several years back when I decided to surprise my trekking partners with a surprise around the fire that night. I took a rather small baking size pumpkin & prepared it as you would a jack o lantern at home, then added to the inside half a stick of butter, fresh grated nutmeg, cinnamon & maple sugar. I wrapped some string around it to keep the lid in place & stuffed it in my haversack. Later that night I pulled coals to one side of the fire, put the pumpkin in the middle & banked the coals good all the way around it. An hour or so later we had a fine fall treat to break up rather mundane trail rations. Try it & enjoy!
