Remember, Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold, pease porridge in the pot, nine days old. Pease porridge was eaten on land and at sea. Aboard ship it was known as Dog's Body and it was served prior to battle so the men would not die with an empty stomach. To make Dog's Body, needed:1 lb dried split pease, 1/4 lb of butter, 4 Tbl spoons of whole wheat flour, 1 tsp of sea salt, pepper, six oz of cubed salted pork from your rations, one pudding bag with tie. First bring a large kettle of water to boil, then place your pease into your bag and tie the opening, you want the pease to be loose in the bag, they are gong to swell. Drop the pudding bag into the kettle and make sure they are covered with water while they cook. You are going to cook these pease for an hour and a half or more. After the initial cooking remove the bag and ring out the water from them after you have placed them in a strainer and allowed them to cool. Pour your pease out of the bag and into a bowl and add your butter, salt pork, flour, salt and pepper to taste. Mix them all very well. Place your mixture back into the bag but this time tie the bag as close to your mixture as you can, get it as tight as you can. Next drop the bag back into the kettle of water and cook the food for another hour +. After the second cooking carfully turn out the pudding into a serving dish. I make the pudding into a 1/2 to 3/4" thick slab and let it stand and then cut the pudding into squares. The squares can be wrapped into waxed paper and placed into your pack and they will be good eaten cold or reheated for days. The above recipe will feed eight men in one setting. I sometimes will boil some salted beef or pork and cook the pudding bag of peas at the same time. A word of warning, when you wash your pudding bags don't use modern perfumed soaps or your dog's body will taste like playdough.
