|When I make a loading block out of pine, I use a scrap piece of wood under the block as a backer. When you drill the holes for the patched balls, the bit will sometimes chip out around the hole when it comes through. The scrap backer piece stops that. And speaking of blocks made of pine, leather dye makes a nice stain. I had some Fiebing medium brown and applied two light coats on the block. Nice and dark, but you could see the grain. A little linseed oil and it looks fine.
