Good day to you all,

I'm a rank newbie, the idea of historical reenactment appeals to me, but I have no idea how to start. At my age (58) I don't much think that I would make a good impression as a soldier, nor do I necessarily want to. I'm somewhat interested in shooting, haven't done much of that so far. It's the history that I want to get into. How detailed should a persona be? Where do like people gather? Does one have to be fully outfitted to start? So many questions. I'd appreciate any help with some answers.

I will have to keep an eye on this thread as I am in the same boat, same age and trying to get in the game.

WHEN are you looking at? I recommend choosing a span of ten years or less: 1755-65, 1770-80, etc. Once you try and cover more than that, you run into changes in clothing styles.

WHERE are you? Are you in town? In a frontier area?

WHO are you? I'm 37. Not too old, but my body is pretty rough these days so there is no Light Infantry persona in my future. I could get away with militia or maybe a Provincial soldier.

If you go with a civilian persona, you have a huge range of types. What are you interested in?
I work in the restaurant industry, so a tavern owner persona fits me well.
Are you a church-going sort? Perhaps you may like to be a preacher.

As far as "how detailed", that's up to you. Most groups will help a new guy get outfitted to start out. They don't expect you to lay out $1,000s before you realize you actually like it.

Thanks for the reply Mario,

Both FIW and AWI periods are fascinating and I see why you suggest picking one for equipment, clothing issues. And I have given some thought to that. Right now I'm thinking of a persona based on my personal and ancestor's history, modified by my age. Any comments would be great:
German on my fathers side, they immigrated into Pennsylvania colony early on, but not as early as my persona which will be into Germantown in the 1680's, Welsh on mothers side... Welsh tract grant by Penn. Both sides of the family to be cabinetmakers in the Philadelphia/ Germantown area, apprenticeship with father in law, etc. Inherit both businesses, so am fairly well off. Thinking of a move to Lancaster to start new shop. Clothing could be rather plain given the Quaker and German pietist influences although I'm church Lutheran not Mennonite or Quaker. Being a craftsman, I know about business, the Quaker and Lutheran influences make me literate and am literate.

My big question... how do a I find a group that would fir in with that?

1680s? If that's not a typo, there are challenges.

There are very few people who do 17th century. Especially compared to F&I or AWI era.

Clothing for the period is not as available (and generally more expensive) compared to 18th century stuff. Ditto for guns (generally speaking).

If that is the time your looking at, I can make some inquiries.

Not a typo, but I meant that my family came over then. That could be part of a persona, but I'm interested in doing about 1760. Sorry about that.

OK.

1760-ish

Pennsylvania

Craftsman, fairly well off.

The biggest issue you'll come across is trying to "be" in PA while living in OH. As long as you're just interested in historical gatherings that aren't necessarily focused on 1760s PA, I should be able to find you something.

I'll get back to you.
