Trying to figure out how to apply solder or lead inlay into a catlinite "peacepipe". Anyone have a good method?

I use a brown paper "dam" that I tape to the piece. Allowing for a small pinprick vent hole to allow gas to escape and better flow.
hard to describe in text.
RE Davis had a neat instructional booklet which shows hoe to add lead inlay on a pipe tomahawk - it might help.
